Players shame Mario Gotze and Rafael van der Vaart as Bundesliga’s biggest flops

He can put this honour next to his league winners’ medal

He might have helped Bayern Munich win the title but Mario Gotze didn’t do much to impress his fellow pros after being voted the Bundesliga’s second biggest flop this season.

The match-winner in the World Cup final scored nine times as Bayern romped to another league success, but Gotze only trailed Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart in the vote of 183 Bundesliga players.

Van der Vaart was part of the Hamburg side who narrowly avoided relegation, only surviving thanks to a play-off against promotion hopefuls Karlsruhe and has since moved to Spain to join Real Betis.

Meanwhile, Kevin de Bruyne might have been named the country’s player of the year for his spectacular contributions to Wolfsburg’s second-place finish and cup success, but he had to play second fiddle to Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi in the One to Watch category.
