They just weren’t hipster enough.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned down more money from the Premier League in 2013 to go and play for Borussia Dortmund.
In an interview with L’Équipe, the man who has hit 21 goals in 21 league games this season revealed that he twice rejected the bigger wages because he followed what was right for his footballing career.
Now, at 26 and absolutely flying high, it seems that Aubameyang did right playing the long game. But he did pass up the opportunity, however, to play under Super Alan Pardew at Newcastle.
The fool.

“I received an offer from Qatar of €10m per year,” Aubameyang said in L’Équipe. “If I accepted, my family would be set up for life.
“We chose to stay at Saint-Etienne, where I got €70,000 per month, knowing that, given my qualities, I could earn money tomorrow.
“The following season, Saint-Etienne wanted to send me to Newcastle.
“We opted for Dortmund, finalists in the Champions League, because my father studied Klopp’s game, even though the pay was lower.”
Nice to know that players would choose football and millions of euro.
