Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were honoured at Sunday night’s PFA Awards with special merit awards.
And while it is only right that two players who have been icons of the Premier League for the past 15 years are given special praise before that see out their careers in MLS, the trophies presented to them to mark this special moment are a little bit weird.
Gerrard’s ‘trophy’ features him leaping salmon like into the air to head the ball, climbing above another Liverpool player with shoulder-length blonde curly hair (presumably Dirk Kuyt?) and a moustached England defender who looks like someone from the 19th century.
Lampard’s has a similar depiction, though his trio of players wear West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City shirts, signifying the three clubs Lampard has played for as well as the most confusing three-way football match of all time.
His 106 caps for England don’t get a mention.
Or perhaps all three players represent Gerrard and Lampard at varying stages of their careers?
Either way, the artistic message of the pieces is, at best, mixed and, at worst, as aimless as one of Lampard and Gerrard’s
