Yes, that John Terry

Fans of irony, you might find this amusing.

John Terry’s notes in today’s matchday programme lead with a strong anti-racism message. Chelsea are hosting Burnley at Stamford Bridge and the club captain has used his message to the fans to denounce Tuesday’s events in Paris.

A group of Chelsea fans were caught on camera preventing a black fan from entering a metro-train, and were heard chanting racist songs.

The Chelsea captain has today said the events were ‘unacceptable’, and joined the club in fully denouncing the group of fans. ‘Football is a sport for everyone,’ Terry said, ‘that is one of the main reasons why we love it, and what happened on the Paris Metro on Tuesday was unacceptable’.

Terry also said this afternoon’s fixture, the club’s annual ‘Game for Equality’, is ‘when we show that this club stands against all forms of discrimination’.

Every right minded person would echo Terry’s sentiment, but some may regard it as a little rich coming from a player who was found guilty by the English football association for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. The Chelsea captain received a four-game ban and a £222,000 fine in 2012 for allegedly calling the then QPR defender a ‘fucking black cunt’.

It’d be interesting to hear what Rio Ferdinand makes of Terry’s programme notes.
