Seven members of FIFA, including two vice-presidents, and a number of marketing and former football officials, were arrested yesterday in Zurich, Switzerland by Swiss authorities, working with the FBI. The men are charged with fraud, with offences dating back over 20 years and now face extradition to the United States. The 14 men face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
At a press conference in New York, Richard Weber, chief of the IRS criminal investigation said: ‘we are issuing Fifa a red card,’ and media outlets throughout the world have done likewise today.
French newspaper Liberation has probably best captured the sentiment towards world football’s governing body with their front page, which is a play on the mafia movie The Godfather.
