It was so simple. Maybe too simple.
Gary Johnson’s ploy to keep his Cheltenham side afloat in League Two this season basically involved a blank piece of paper and a marker.
The Robins manager turned into a creche teacher and asked his players to sign the paper, saying: “I promise to do all I can to keep Cheltenham Town FC in the league.”
But with Cheltenham sitting in 23rd place, it looks more and more like they will be playing non-league football next year and Johnson believes it all comes down to his players’ insincerity when they signed his beloved piece of paper.
If they do stay up, maybe he can invest in a blackboard next season. Just a little bit more extravagant than a sheet of A3.
