28th March 1993
When we were sixteen all we were interested in was the forthcoming World Cup and how we were going to organise a year-long campaign to get that hot girl from the Pres to go to our debs. We certainly weren’t about to make our professional debut for our boyhood club and begin a career of incredible success.
We clearly weren’t Franceso Totti-but this day 22 years ago the Italian and Roma legend came on as a sub at for his club at just 16-and he hasn’t left since.
The teenager made his debut with five minutes to go in the game with Brescia as Roma led 2-0. He recalled the moment in his 2007 autobiography
‘I wasn’t expecting anything, really, because just having travelled with the first team was a big thing for me, something I’ll never forget. The day after, on the Sunday, Vujadin Boskov turned to me and said: ‘Come on, get warmed up, you’re going on.’ I was sat on the bench next to Roberto Muzzi and figured the coach was talking to him, but Roberto said: ‘Look, he means you, go on.’ I spent about ten seconds warming up and went on. The game was almost over, there were about five minutes left… I was really excited and very happy.’
His debut was just the beginning of an incredible career that has seen Totti continue to play now well into his 30’s and still be as effective as ever. The haircut has got a bit tighter at times but he really hasn’t changed that much. Damn those good Italian genes.
