Arsene Wenger’s first major signing could be a crucial one
Arsenal have sorted out their goalkeeping issue by completing the signing of Chelsea stopper Petr Cech.
Both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina spent time between the sticks last season for the Gunners, but the Czech international’s reported £11million arrival will remove any doubts over the position at the Emirates.
Cech, who at 33 still has several years at the top level ahead of him, was deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea, where Thibaut Courtois took over as No.1 last season, and was heavily linked with Arsenal for some time.
Nonetheless, Blues skipper John Terry is far from happy about the move, telling Talksport that Cech will deliver a big improvement to their London rivals.
“If they do get him, he will strengthen them for sure,” Terry said. “He will save them 12 or 15 points a season. Petr was an unbelievable professional last year. When you get left out of the team it can be hard to accept but when he came in he was exceptional.
“He deserves a lot of credit for that. We understand he wants to play first-team football but nobody wants to see him leave the club. He’s going to be sorely missed and will improve any side he goes to.”
Terry and his Chelsea team-mates will get an early chance to lock horns with Cech as Arsenal’s opening game of the season is the Community Shield against the Premier League champions on August 2.
