Paul McGrath’s all-time XI is packed full of Republic of Ireland, Manchester United and Aston Villa legends.
One of Ireland’s best ever footballers picked his team at a Second Captains‘ event in Cork earlier this week, and went with Packie Bonner in goal, behind a defence featuring two Irish full-backs.
Denis Irwin is at left-back, where he played 56 times for Ireland and for United over 12 years. Brighton manager Chris Hughton is at right-back, with Kevin Moran and former Villa defender Shaun Teale in central defence.
McGrath’s midfield features two of Ireland’s best ever players, Liam Brady and Roy Keane, alongside Bryan Robson. McGrath said during the show that he regards the United and England legend as the best footballer he ever played alongside. Former Villa great Gordon ‘Sid’ Cowans completes the midfield.
Dwight Yorke and Dean Saunders start up-front, both of whom played alongside McGrath at Villa. And the Ireland great even named substitutes, with Ronnie Whelan, Tony Daley, Ray Houghton, Norman Whiteside and Mark Hughes on the bench.
