The former footballer Paul Gascoigne was arrested by police at Durham railway station

Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after allegations made by a woman on a train travelling from York on Monday, as per Sky News.

The woman claimed to have been touched inappropriately by the 51-year-old, who was then held by police. He has been released while officers investigate the details of the allegation.

Gascoigne has had a highly-publicised battle with alcoholism for a number of years, though in recent times he has appeared healthier during his public appearances.

He was forced to leave an appearance on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM earlier this month after feeling unwell, leading the ex-Newcastle, Spurs and Rangers player being forced to deny claims that he had been intoxicated while on the show.
