Arsene Wenger will be remembered by Arsenal fans for the many good times, rather than the recent shortcomings.
The Gunners won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups during Wenger’s time at the helm and for all the Wenger Out banners and Arsenal Fan TV tirades, the Frenchman will go down as a legend.
Wenger’s 22-year association with the club has officially come to an end after he managed his final Arsenal game, a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield on Sunday.
The 68-year-old has revealed the regrets he’s had from his time in the dugouts at Highbury and the Emirates and one took place very, very recently.
“My biggest regret is that I have not won the Champions League for Arsenal… I was 13 minutes away,” Wenger told BT Sport, via the Evening Standard.
“The other regret is perhaps the way we went out against Atletico Madrid. I still don’t understand how we could lose this two-tie game. We should have been done after the first game.”
Arsenal took the lead in the 2006 Champions League final but two late goals from Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti denied them the trophy.
Plenty of neutrals were hoping that Wenger would bow out with a European honour this season and he was on track for the Europa League final but Arsenal fell painfully short as Atletico Madrid eliminated them in the semi-final.
It remains unknown where Wenger is off to next but, after hinting that he wants to manage in the Champions League yet again in the future, perhaps he’ll get his hands on that elusive European trophy before he retires.
