On-loan Chelsea footballer is dropped after Conor McGregor comment on Instagram

Gareth Makim

What a guy.

Those are the three little words that got John Swift dropped from the Brentford squad for yesterday’s Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers.

The on-loan Chelsea youngster added the comment to an Instagram post by Irish UFC champion Conor McGregor which read: “Some days they love you. Some days they hate you. Both days I got paid.”

His response on Friday provoked the ire of Brentford supporters, who took the comment as criticism of them by the England Under-21 midfielder, something Swift denied.

Brentford manager Dean Smith was nonetheless alerted to the post and took a dim of view of it.

“John wasn’t in the team anyway but he posted something on social media that I was made aware of,” Smith said.

“I spoke to him this morning and I just didn’t think it was right to put him on the bench today.

“He explained it when he took it down and apologised. I don’t think there was any malice in it, but it was naive from a young lad.”
