No place for former Manchester United team-mates in Rio Ferdinand’s ‘Home Nations’ Euro 2016 XI

Robert Redmond

Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney are good friends.

The pair played together for nine years at Manchester United, and eight years for England, but Ferdinand couldn’t find a place for his old pal in his “Home nations” XI.

Jonny Evans, his former defensive partner at Old Trafford, also didn’t make the cut.

Ferdinand is working as a pundit for the BBC at Euro 2016, and while on his travels decided to pick an XI from the “Home nations” – England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

No player from Michael O’Neill’s side features in the team dominated by England team members, and also includes the Welsh trio of Ashley Williams, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale.

Rio has proved more ruthless than England manager Roy Hodgson, who is set to start Rooney in midfield for England’s opener against Wales on Saturday, and drop Jamie Vardy to the bench.
