Newcastle weren’t going to pass up the opportunity to save a few pennies
News of yet another PR disaster for the Mike Ashley regime at Newcastle.
Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez have confirmed their release by the club, and revealed they received the bad news in the most unprofessional of circumstances.
The pair are in Northern Ireland working towards a coaching qualification, where Taylor received a phone call from interim manager John Carver.
After informing Taylor he would not be offered a new contract, Carver then asked the 30-year-old to pass the phone to Gutierrez.
Ryan Taylor was released from NUFC by telephone before being told to pass his mobile to Jonas Gutierrez so he could be delivered same news.

‘We were here, probably not even a day, we had just finished a lecture, and John Carver rang me and he told me the club were not going to offer me a new deal,’ Taylor told Sky Sports.
‘I had a chat with him, he is a good friend of mine. I have spent a lot of time with John, in and out of the club. So, I had a chat, and then he asked me to pass the phone to Jonas. It was unbelievable.’
Gutierrez, a cult hero on Tyneside after fighting his way back from cancer to score in the final game of the season as Newcastle beat West Ham to save their Premier League status, added: ‘I did not expect to be offered a new contract and it is not about that, because you have to move on.
‘I can understand the football issues and those type of things but, more important for me, is that they can pick up the phone and call me or call my agent, and say ‘listen, thank you but we are going to release you and it is going to be OK’. That is more the way.’
It is another classless move from the club, with neither player having a bad word to say about Carver, who is clearly being made to handle all his paymaster’s dirty work before Newcastle hire a new manager, with former Derby boss Steve McClaren in pole position.
