A drowning man will grab at anything to save himself.
And Steven McClaren is throwing his arms around as many men as he can get to the north of England to try and rescue Newcastle’s woeful season, as well as his own job.
The former England manager has endured a tough start to life at St James’ Park but has made a big impression this January transfer window with his chequebook, or Mike Ashley’s at least.
They have already spent a hardly believable £29million with the purchases of Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend seeing them become the big spenders this month above any other side in the Topflight.
And it seems this evening they are willing to spend almost £50million as various reports suggest they have tabled a bid of £21million for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, which may or may not have been rejected, this evening.
If Newcastle sign Berahino as well as Shelvey & Townsend it'll be a bigger gamble of £40m than putting it on the 4.10 at Wincanton

And it seems they are not the only side who are looking to sign the striker who was once linked with a move to Tottenham and Liverpool as Stoke are also sniffing around the frontman.
Sources tell me Stoke have bid in excess of £21m for Saido Berahino

Although it does seem like he is in good form.
Saido Berahino has scored 2+ goals in a single game for the first time since May 2015 (3-0 win vs. Chelsea). pic.twitter.com/o5xwI2thEg
