Germany have released a new home jersey, and it’s a beauty

Designing new football kits must be getting harder and harder.

For any kit you have to keep within a broad set of rules – certain colours, stripes, hoops or whatever – and yet still find a design that hasn’t been already used.

And every year that gets a little more difficult. Possibly because teams keep releasing new ones.

Germany released this kit last November:

And 12 months later they’ve already ditched it.

So, it’s no surprise then that kit designers are turning to the past for inspiration for new kits.

The new Germany shirt is the latest to borrow a theme from a previous incarnation, with this year’s effort apparently a nod to the 1990 kit, when West Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final in Rome.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil revealed the shirt on his Twitter account.

Adidas claim the design is “iconic in street and skateboarding culture”, while Germany defender Mats Hummels said: “I am a fan of our more traditional kits, but the new variant is even cooler and more dynamic. I really like it.”

The world champions are taking on San Marino this week as they look to keep up their 100 per cent record in qualifying for the 2018 tournament, being held in Russia.

Boss Joachim Low last month signed a new contract to lead the team until the end of Euro 2020.

“Our collaboration is defined by great trust,” he said.

“We all want to confirm our success from Brazil in Russia. It’s a great joy for me to develop the team and the players and lead them to the highest level – that spurs me on just as much as winning titles.

“Right now all that matters for us is to win our group and qualify for the World Cup.”
