What a whirlwind week it’s been for Eunan O’Kane.
The Bournemouth midfielder went from unheralded, uncapped option to genuine prospect for the Euros all in the space of a few days.
O’Kane was handed his international debut off the bench by Martin O’Neill against Switzerland seven days ago and he was so impressive that he earned a starting place for Ireland the following Monday.
Comments from O’Neill in the wake of the pair of friendlies would suggest that O’Kane will be part of the final squad that flies to France this summer.
One of the most intriguing elements of a youngster’s first experience with the international set-up is how he adapts to a different coaching staff and system.
After returning to his club, O’Kane spoke to Bournemouth’s website and revealed his impression of both O’Neill and assistant manager Roy Keane.
“It is a bit strange being away in a different set-up and playing in a different team,” O’Kane told Inside Story. “You become so used to the way club football is that, so it was another valuable experience for me.
“Both Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane have been great to work for, as well. They are two managers that have achieved great things in the game and people I really respect.
“It’s interesting to see how differently they work, though. The manager will be more on the outside of training and only gets involved as and when he needs to.
“Whereas Roy is much quicker to come down on you if get something wrong in training.
“That said, I think Roy’s reputation in the media proceeds him slightly. He definitely comes across as being a little bit scarier on TV than he is in real life.
“Of course he doesn’t come in singing and dancing in the morning! But he is a friendly man to speak to and very helpful if you have any questions.
“Both of them have been great for me to work with and hopefully I can continue to impress them and make plenty more appearances.”
