It’s not the despair that gets you in the end, it’s the hope.
So Liverpool fans will probably be hoping Michael Owen has got it all wrong with his prediction that his ex-club can still make the Champions League offering false hope.
Owen thinks its going to be ‘easy’ for Jurgen Klopp’s side to make the top four, now that they have some of their toughest fixtures of the year out of the way.
We’re not so sure as they face top of the table Arsenal on Wednesday night, but Owen feels that the Merseysiders still have a chance:
“It’s going to be quite tough but you couldn’t really want it any easier.
“Manchester United are floundering, so they aren’t certain and you never know if Leicester are going to drop out of things at any point.
“It’s a huge opportunity for Liverpool to be in the top four but they can’t drop any more points.
“It’s definitely possible, but if you were a bookmaker you would say it’s odds against at the moment. It’s just searching for consistency. I think they need to go on a fair old run now.”
That run probably needs to begin at Anfield tomorrow night with Arsenal looking to exploit Liverpool’s massive injury list at Anfield.
A win for the Gunners would push them a step closer to a first Premier League title since 2004 but, according to the Daily Mirror, Owen admits that he will only celebrate if one side wins the title because of the poor standard of all the teams this term.
“You almost think that whoever wins the league this year, unless it’s Leicester, I won’t be celebrating… if you know what I mean.”
“Nobody has had to improve to win it, and the Champions League performances haven’t been convincing. You’d have to say the Premier League has gone backwards overall in the last couple of seasons.”
