Things didn’t work out as planned for Memphis at Manchester United, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom.
The Dutch international finalised his move away from Old Trafford today, joining Olympique Lyonnais on a deal thought to be worth an initial £16m.
Memphis had started just one game under José Mourinho – an EFL Cup victory over Northampton Town – after a stop-start debut season under Louis van Gaal in which he scored just two league goals.

The former PSV winger didn’t start too shabbily for United, but his form tailed off dramatically once his teammate and good friend Luke Shaw suffered a season-ending injury.
So it is no surprise that, when sharing personalised messages of thanks with some of his former teammates, the England international left-back came first.

Shaw wasn’t the only one who Memphis will miss now that he’s moved to Lyon. Captain Wayne Rooney has received some criticism for his on-field displays, but it seems his impact was felt by the £25m man off the pitch.

Of the four players to receive a personal message from Memphis, only Paul Pogba was a Mourinho signing, with the Dutchman thanking him in English and French.

And finally, David De Gea. Is there anyone who doesn’t get on with David De Gea?

Memphis was also keen to thank everyone associated with Manchester United after bringing his short stint to an end. It didn’t quite go according to plan, but it wasn’t for lack of trying.
