Marc Cucurella learns during live interview that Jorginho has been sold to Arsenal

Callum Boyle

Awkward.

Marc Cucurella was left shocked after he discovered that his Chelsea teammate Jorginho would be leaving the club.

Jorginho is set to make the move from west to north London and join Arsenal on an 18-month deal for a reported £12m.

The Italian is set to leave Stamford Bridge as a Europa League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup winner, making over 200 appearances and scoring 29 times for the Blues.

As with any transfer on deadline day, things move quickly and you can often miss a move in the blink of an eye and for Cucurella, that happened to him.

While appearing in an interview for Goal, the fullback was asked who the smartest player at Chelsea was, to which he said: “The smartest player is Jorginho. 100 per cent.

“Because he has a…”

He was then cut mid-answer as someone informed him of the news.

“I don’t think he plays for Chelsea anymore,” someone replied.

Looking shocked, Cucurella replied: “No?”

“I think he’s transferring to Arsenal,” they continued.

Still confused, the full-back tried to protest the decision and was asked if he could change the name, but the Spaniard was too stunned to change his answer.

With Jorginho set to depart, Chelsea are doing everything they can to sign Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez before the 11 pm deadline on Tuesday.

Chelsea have said that they will pay the World Cup winner’s £106m release clause, however, the structure of the payments have put Benfica off and they are still locked in negotiations over a move.

Graham Potter’s side have been one of the most active in the market, signing the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoît Badiashile and João Félix and Malo Gusto.
