Manchester United’s academy graduates have been the bedrock of their most successful spells.
Sir Matt Busby’s title winning teams in 1956 and 1957 had an average age of 21 and 22 respectively. Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant United teams were built around the Class of 92 – Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.
Throughout the club’s history, United have always promoted young players, with Marcus Rashford the latest star to breakthrough when Louis van Gaal was manager.
Jose Mourinho isn’t known for his willingness to use young players, but he is said to be a big fan of Scott McTominay, and is considering promoting him to the first-team squad for the upcoming season.
According to Duncan Castles, the 20-year-old midfielder has impressed Mourinho on United’s pre-season tour.
McTominay was also part of United’s squad for the final five fixtures of the Premier League season, when Mourinho was resting players for the Europa League. He started on the final day of last season against Crystal Palace.
According to Castles, McTominay has undergone a growth spurt in the last 18 months, growing from 5ft6 to 6ft3, which may help explain why Mourinho sees a place for him in the first-team squad.
The midfielder scored his first senior goal for United during last Sunday’s friendly victory over Norwegian side Valerenga.
