We’ve got good news and bad news Manchester United fans. The club have signed a new player… but he won’t help current defensive troubles.

Manchester United have signed Canadian youngster Josh Doughty from Real Salt Lake. The 17-year old midfielder had been playing for the MLS franchise’s academy and, according to the player’s twitter account, has passed a medical with United. Doughty turns 18 in April and will sign a youth contract with the club.

Doughty is a Canadian youth international, but is also eligible for England, through his English born parents, and the United States, where he has lived most of his live. The midfielder can obtain UK citizenship due to his parents and therefore does not need to be 18 to sign for the English club. ‘I will be playing mainly with the United under-21s, however, I might play with the under-18s to get back up to speed’ Doughty said. ‘I can play for Canada, England and hopefully will be eligible for the U.S. soon (but) I am still undecided on which team I will play for at the moment’.

Doughty scored 10 goals for Salt Lake’s U-16 team in the US Soccer Development Academy last season.
