Manchester United legend would have no complaints if David de Gea leaves club

Does the great Dane know something we don't

The last time we checked David de Gea was still a Manchester United player, and there was no firm approach from his main suitors Real Madrid to prise him away from the club just yet.

However one Old Trafford legend feels that if the Spaniard does leave then his curent employer won’t be able to complain.

Peter Schmeichel is a big fan of the current Manchester United number one, but feels that the club’s player of the year should not be prevented from leaving for La Liga if he wants to.

The former Denmark international believes that de Gea owes nothing to the club and Louis van Gaal can replace him if he does go,

‘Clearly there’s an issue where either himself or his girlfriend wants to go back to Madrid and you can’t argue that Real Madrid isn’t as big a place as Manchester United – some would say bigger.’

‘If he wants to go, he’s done fantastically well for Manchester United. We should be thanking him and we,  of course, will move on.’

As the season draws to a close it’s likely that speculation surrounding the former Atletico Madrid man will increase, but Schmeichel has faith that the club will be able to cope with his departure if it happens

‘If he wants to continue playing [for us], we’ll be very happy with that. If not, we move on and the manager will take decisions on who takes over.
