Manchester United legend outlines ‘fear’ that Pep Guardiola will become club’s next manager

Is he right?

Louis van Gaal managed Manchester United to their first goal in 404 minutes last night but that won’t stop people discussing who should succeed him.

Supporters, pundits and former players have not been won over by the brand of football being played at Old Trafford so far this season.

Attacking talents like Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay were brought in at great expense but the flowing football has not followed. Not yet anyway.

While Van Gaal himself has nominated his assistant Ryan Giggs as the heir apparent, many others are eyeing up long-time Manchester City target Pep Guardiola.

The man who created the Barcelona team that dominated Spain and Europe would be a dream appointment to most.

But not Peter Schmeichel.

The legendary goalkeeper feels the Bayern Munich manager is not the perfect man to take over the club, despite his incredible record of success both in Spain and in Germany.

The former goalkeeper told Sky Sports that he fears “The Bald One” would change the club too much

“This is my biggest fear that someone like Pep Guardiola will become the next Manchester United manager.”

“Guardiola has a way of playing, he has a system and he sticks to that. He has changed Bayern Munich from what I thought was a fantastic treble-winning team under Jupp Heynckes.

“[They played] quick football, through the middle, using the width of the pitch, but they were passing the ball and killing everyone they played against.”

“He started to make them pass the ball sideways and I don’t think they are as exciting as what they were.”

We’re not sure many Manchester United fans would reject the chance to see Guardiola at Old Trafford rather than the Etihad, where he has been linked for several seasons now, and the reaction to Schmeichel’s comments has been mixed.
