Manchester United’s striking options look set to become even more depleted

Chicharito's United career looks to over

This appears to be the moment that signalled the end of Javier Hernandez’s Manchester United career.

The Mexican striker came on as a substitute against Club Brugge, as United comfortably qualified for the Champions League group stage last Wednesday.

Handed the chance to open his account for the season from the penalty spot, Hernandez slipped and missed the target, prompting an epic death stare from Louis van Gaal.

According to Jason Burt, The Telegraph’s chief football correspondent, Hernandez has been told by the United manager that he can leave the club before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

The game in Belgium last Wednesday is understood to have been “the final straw” for Hernandez, who also missed a late, close range chance.

United could now be left with just Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as recognised first-team strikers, while Van Gaal has spoken about also using midfielder Marouane Fellaini as a central striker.GettyImages-484413686Hernandez joined United in 2010, scoring 37 goals in 103 appearances, but has a year remaining on his deal at Old Trafford, and spent last season on-loan at Real Madrid.

The 27 year reportedly prefers a move to German side Bayer Leverkusen ahead of West Ham United, who’ve sought to sign the striker all summer.
