Manchester United fans were not happy with Memphis Depay’s performance against Liverpool

Expectations

Conan Doherty

Ah, lads. Give the young fella some time.

When United acquired the services of Dutch prospect Memphis Depay back in June, Gary Neville tried to calm the storm by saying that they were buying potential. And that they were investing in the future.

But the attacker’s highlights from his PSV years and his obvious ability couldn’t fail but get the fans excited and, when he was thrown straight into the starting team, big things were expected of him.

Memphis is only 21 but the comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo haven’t stopped and, now, every mistake that the wide man makes – usually out of trying too hard to impress – is starting to be jumped on more and more.

His performance against Liverpool got a lot of Red Devil backs up. And just football fans alike. Even though he lasted just 45 minutes and United won anyway, his underwhelming first half performance was enough for a tirade of abuse.

All well and good… but what on earth is this guy smoking?

Alas, he was put out of his misery.

Still, some weren’t happy.
