Manchester United claimed their first win of the pre-season after a 9-8 win on penalties over AC Milan.
Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s side in the 12th minute before Suso equalised three minutes later for Milan to level the scores at 1-1.
The score was locked at 1-1 for the remainder of the match with neither side able to find a breakthrough during extra-time.
There were 26 penalties in total during the shootout with on loan midfielder Franck Kessié missing the final penalty for Milan with a horrendous attempt at a panenka penalty.
United were without new signing Fred during the win but Mourinho hopes that the Brazilian will be able to improve his side’s attack this season with his range of short passing.
“Michael Carrick is Michael Carrick, and there is no successor,” said Mourinho.
“Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and even Ander Herrera are physical and strong players.
“We think having a player like Fred in the squad – who is more technical, more quality of passing in short spaces – he can maybe connect (with) the attacking players.
“He could be an important player for us, but let’s wait.”
