Jose Mourinho is looking to Madrid to add some fresh legs to Manchester United’s midfield.
The 53-year-old was officially announced as United manager on Friday and he reportedly has a transfer wishlist in place for Ed Woodward to get cracking on.
Atop the list is Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, who Mourinho has been a fan of since his time in La Liga.
With the days of 34-year-old Michael Carrick numbered at Old Trafford, Mourinho wants to inject some youth into the centre of the park and he’s pinpointed Niguez as one of his primary targets this summer, according to reports in the Independent.
Niguez has only recently signed a new deal at the Vicente Calderón and had a €70m release clause added to his contract but, eager to impress after a mediocre three seasons since Alex Ferguson left, United intend to splash the cash this summer.
€70m for a 21-year-old is admittedly a gamble but the Red Devils showed that they are not afraid of spending big on young players, with the arrival of Anthony Martial for a huge fee last summer proving one of the rare high points of Louis van Gaal’s reign at Old Trafford.
