If Pep Guardiola is to guide his new Manchester City team to Champions League glory this season, he needs to make sure he’s actually in the competition (apologies for stating the obvious, there).
Having scraped fourth place on goal difference last season, City have to negotiate a playoff to reach the group stages of the continent’s premier cup competition. On Friday morning, they learned that they would face Romanian side Steaua Bucharest in the two-legged tie.
Although Steaua won the European Cup thirty years ago, the draw could’ve been worse for City who managed to avoid potential banana skin ties with Roma and AS Monaco.
It’d take a brave man to lump big money on Steaua to progress from the tie against City, but it seems the Romanian club (or the bloke running their Twitter account, at least) aren’t fazed at the prospect of playing Guardiola’s side.
Asked if they were looking forward to the tie, their reply – complete with a #GiantKillers hashtag – suggested they fancied their chances.

City will head to Romania for the first leg just before the start of the Premier League season on either August 16 or 17. The return leg will take place at the Etihad Stadium a week later.
