Manchester City have €50m bid for one of Europe’s best midfielders rejected

Napoli will demand a very high fee for the playmaker

You’d suspect that they’ll bid again.

Manchester City are searching for a replacement for Fernandinho, who recently turned 34. His legs have not yet completely gone and he has performed well under Guardiola in a very important position, but age will catch up with him eventually and City are trying to bring in a long-term successor.

The Premier League champions identified Napoli midfielder Jorginho to be that man and have made an approach to the Italian club, slapping down €50m bid for the player, which Napoli have swiftly rejected, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis told CorSport.

City will not give up after just one bid, but Napoli will try to milk them for as much as they can, as the Italian club fight to keep their team together this summer.

Jorginho’s line breaking passes, ability to play quick, one-touch passes out of tight spaces and his dynamism make him the ideal candidate to succeed Fernandinho at the base of City’s midfield.

City may have won the league in comfortable style, but Pep Guardiola will not rest on his laurels. He is well aware of the constant need to improve his squad, and Jorginho will be the top of the list. They could also renew the pursuit of Riyad Mahrez that failed in January.
