Man United v CSKA Moscow – Player ratings

They scored!

Nooruddean Choudry

Starting XI:

De Gea – 9

One incredibly important outstretched arm in a one-on-one against Doumbia may have kept United in the competition.

Young – 6

Some important blocks but could have done more going forward.

Smalling – 9

Excellent again. His goal line clearance shortly before Rooney’s winner was vital.

Blind – 8

Competent foil for Smalling. A few lovely balls out of defence.

Rojo – 7

Plenty of bombing down the left flank. Wasteful with a few great chances.

Carrick – 6

Good work but did sometimes look a little unsure, which is unusual for him.

Schweinsteiger – 8

Prodded and probed without hurting CSKA, but generally controlled the play.

Lingard – 8

Energy, pace and initiative. His marvellous cross made the precious goal.

Mata – 6

Lots of touches but didn’t really create all that much.

Martial – 6

Probably his poorest game for United but still caused problems with his movement.

Rooney – 6

A goal, finally a goal. But was quite poor overall, including a comical miss.

Subs:

Fellaini – 6

Old Trafford booed his introduction (due to Martial’s withdrawal) but seemed to unsettle CSKA.

Herrera – 5

Didn’t have time to do much. Neat enough.

Depay – 6

Came on as if he had a point to prove. Showed a good attitude to being dropped.
