A secret signing maybe?

Manchester United have made their first signing ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Premier League website.

While United supporters had been eyeing PSV forward Cody Gakpo, Liverpool stole in on the Netherlands star and secured his services in a deal that could eventually rise to £44m. It is expected that United will look to the loan market for a striker, but there does seem to be some early movement.

According to the league’s official website, Erik ten Hag’s side have strengthened their attacking options with the addition of 29-year-old Betinho.

The website also claims that the Portuguese forward has been given the number 11 shirt, although there is no official confirmation from the Red Devils that any deal has been completed.

Man United

Even if it does turn out to be true, United supporters will be forgiven for thinking that the signing is an underwhelming one.

Starting his career at Sporting Lisbon, Betinho made his senior debut in 2011 before having loan spells at Vitoria Setubal and Brentford. He only made one appearance for Brentford as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat to Norwich City.

Betinho then left Sporting to join Belenenses on a four-year deal however he never showed signs of improvement and returned to Lisbon’s B team to get more game time.

In 2019, Betinho earned himself a move to Portuguese club Espinho, where he has scored 18 league goals in 15 appearances and now has seemingly landed himself a move to Old Trafford if the latest development is anything to go by.

United are in the market for a striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who left by mutual consent after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Cody Gakpo looked to be the number one target however it was confirmed on Boxing Day that PSV Eindhoven had agreed a deal with Liverpool which will see the Dutchman head to Anfield.

Ten Hag has stressed that the club need extra reinforcements if they are to continue to challenge for a top four spot however it remains to be seen if United will spend in January.
