Man United fans are set to protest against the Glazer family
Manchester United have opted to cancel their pre-match team meeting ahead of their game against Liverpool on Monday night due to security fears.
United supporters are expected to protest in strong numbers against the club’s owners – the Glazer family – as they try to force them into selling the club.
The Daily Mail reported that players were set to meet at the Lowry Hotel for 1pm but were told that the meeting would no longer take place, with some fans already gathered outside.
Similar protests took place when the two teams met two years ago, resulting in the game at Old Trafford being postponed as fans managed to break into the stadium.
Glazer family open to selling minority stake in United
Reports emerged last week claiming that the Glazer family would be open to selling a minority stake in the club, sparking fresh hope from United supporters that this could be the beginning of the end for their ownership.
Several suitors have registered their interest, Sir Jim Ratcliffe being one of those, as he said he would be willing to take the minority stake with a view to taking full ownership of United.
US investment fund Apollo have also apparently held talks with the Glazers, with discussions largely focused on how much money the Glazers would receive for selling those shares, with no plans for any extra investment into the club itself, something supporters have been protesting for.
Both sides are looking for a first win of the season
United are in desperate need of a win after starting the Premier League season with back-to-back defeats. Liverpool have also failed to make a strong start, drawing their opening two games.
New signing Casemiro is expected to be introduced to the United fans at half-time after agreeing to join from Real Madrid. Meanwhile Harry Maguire is reportedly set to be dripped as Erik ten Hag favours a partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the centre of defence.
