We’ve seen football clubs punished for strange things over the years, but this might top it all.
Manchester City have been celebrating their last-gasp Champions League group stage win over Sevilla, but a surprise judgement from UEFA has brought them crashing back down to earth.
City’s supporters booed the Champions League anthem, which is played ahead of every game in the competition. No big deal, right? Wrong.

It is not the first time that fans of the club have booed the anthem, with supporters taking the approach after what they consider to be questionable treatment of City by the governing body, but it’s the first time the activity has brought about a UEFA charge.
The club was hit by a hefty financial fair play fine back in 2014, while City supporters have also been critical of UEFA’s response to the racial abuse of vice-captain Yaya Toure during a match against CSKA Moscow.
It’s more bad news for the Premier League club, whose victory was almost overshadowed by fighting between Sevilla fans and Polish ultras in Manchester city centre.
