Luis Enrique hits out at jeering Barcelona fans after Leverkusen win

Fair play

Too right, too.

Give a man an inch and he’ll take a mile. Give a fan a treble and he’ll take the biscuit.

Barcelona fans aren’t proving themselves to be so appreciative. Their new manager has one season under his belt and he already has brought four major trophies back to the Nou Camp. It doesn’t satisfy them.

Success or not, history or no history, the bigger picture aside, when Barca are 1-0 down at home in the Champions League, it isn’t good enough.

The fans jeered and whistled as Luis Enrique’s men trailed Levurkusen on Tuesday night.

A Sergi Roberto goal 10 minutes from time, a Luis Suarez stunner two minutes later, and they were soon silenced. Well, they weren’t silenced but they weren’t whistling impatiently anyway.

And, despite the victory, manager Luis Enrique hit out at the fans afterwards for being so quick to get on his team’s back.

“We needed their support today when things weren’t going our way. You can hear the whistling very clearly from the pitch,” he said. “The credit this team has, it deserves more. This team deserves a higher faith, it deserves credit, unshakable support.

“If we don’t run, okay, but the team was trying its heart out. The belief should be there from the fans, belief and support that we need. If we hadn’t won we wouldn’t be group leaders, but I already warned that this team would be very difficult.

“I’m not complaining about the fans but this team deserves more. Most of the fans support us but you could hear whistling. At 2-1, we don’t need the support but at 0-1 we do. Those whistling; don’t. We deserve more than that. Footballers need encouragement, not whistling.”
