Wayne Rooney’s standing at Old Trafford has completely changed since Alex Ferguson left.
When the former Manchester United manager stepped down in 2013, after almost 27 years in charge, Rooney was, according to Jamie Jackson, The Guardian’s Manchester football correspondent, “deeply distrusted” by Ferguson.
Rooney was linked with a move to Chelsea throughout that summer’s transfer window, but stayed, signed a new contract, as David Moyes became manager, and become club captain the following year when Louis van Gaal took over.
However, if Ferguson had stayed, even just another year, Rooney would likely have never played for United again.
Such a scenario seems improbable when considering Van Gaal’s comments about the player ahead of Sunday’s game away to Swansea City. The United boss said Rooney is now so powerful at Old Trafford, he has influence over a range of issues, from team selection to staff appointments.
“Things like the selection and the kitchen and the members of the staff, everything you can mention, he is involved” Van Gaal said.
“I think he trusts me so that is also very important and I trust him.”
“So when he comes to me and has remarks I always pay attention.”
Van Gaal has fostered close relationships with his captains at previous team, particularly with the Netherlands in the run-up to the 2014 World Cup.
The then Dutch manager consulted both Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben over a formation change, as the country finished third at the tournament.
His revelation about Rooney would also explain why Van Gaal is likely to persist with the player in the first XI, regardless of form.
