Liverpool sign Jonathan Woodgate… as a scout

Liverpool.

Jonathan Woodgate’s career doesn’t make much sense. Then again, Jonathan Woodgate never made much sense, did he?

If you thought the defender’s two years in Spain were utterly pointless – like most of us did – you were wrong. Woodgate might be remembered in La Liga for the worst debut of all time but his experience out there was seemingly enough to convince Liverpool to sign him at 36.

Eight international caps over 10 years shows how injury prone the once highly-touted back was throughout his career. He was always crying out for a job off the pitch.

Enter, Liverpool.

Woodgate, who retired in the summer and not nine years ago like everyone thought, has been brought on board into the Anfield scouting department and he will be based in Spain and Portugal.

The Englishman spent the 2004/05 season and the 05/06 campaign in the Spanish capital before he was shipped home on loan until a permanent move away was completed.

The story was broken by Sky Sports but, naturally, everyone is on baited breath awaiting official confirmation.
