Unsighted, slightly off his line and anxious. When the moment arrived, he reacted superbly.
A little under the hour mark at Anfield and Emre Can was somehow able to canter into the Manchester United box and get a shot away.
United’s back four – Daley Blind, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia – were all drawn towards the German. Tractor beam stuff. Everyone reacting but getting there too late; not doing enough.
Can was hardly in full flight. He looked set to break the determined deadlock in slow motion.
Eventually, he dug a shot out and it was heading straight for the bottom corner. De Gea was unsighted by Bailly and Smalling’s legs but got a glimpse of the ball and sprung to his right.
Half of Anfield was out of their seats, ready to roar.
