The battleground of football is littered with the bodies of strange transfer stories. From Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford, to Gareth Bale’s potential arrival at Old Trafford, to Neymar’s move to Old Trafford, there have been plenty over the years.
Away from the litany of failed or made up transfer stories linking Manchester United with every human imaginable, today has seen what is perhaps the most ludicrous transfer story of the year served up.
Because yes, distinguished readers, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
According to reports, the Reds are ‘mulling over’ a deal to take the 40-year-old former Italy international to Anfield upon the end of his contract with the Serie A club.
While Buffon is widely expected to – and almost definitely will – retire at the end of the season, it has been suggested that he may delay retirement to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing alongside Alberto Moreno.
Let’s get real however because it is a near certainty that this will not happen, and that come Champions League final day Buffon will not be at home supporting his new team, but instead at home crying into a glass of delicious red wine as his hero – his muse – Alberto Moreno lifts the Champions League.
