It’s an obvious joke, but he was (probably) the first to make it.
Liverpool confirmed on Monday afternoon that their chief executive Ian Ayre would leave the club in 2017, when his contract expires.
The club’s official statement praised the 52 year old’s role in returning the club to a healthy financial state.
“Under his leadership, we have seen Liverpool transform from a club that was on the brink of bankruptcy, to one which today enjoys strong financial and operational health.”
However, it’s fair to say most Liverpool fans on social media weren’t shedding any tears over Ayre’s departure.
One quick-witted Liverpool fan had a different reaction to the news though.
Rather than celebrate Ayre’s planned exit, this fan, replying to a post on Liverpool’s official Facebook page announcing the news, made light of the CEO’s apparent failure to push through transfer deals.
