“I have the first and the last word on transfers.”
So said Jurgen Klopp when he was unveiled as Liverpool manager last October.
And if that’s the case then Herr Klopp has been a busy little bee this summer – especially when it comes to shipping players out of the club.
He has spent money, bringing in goalkeeper Loris Karius from Mainz 04, defender Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg, as well as Southampton’s Sadio Mané, Newcastle’s Giorginio Wijnaldum, Joël Matip from Schalke, and back-up ‘keeper Alex Manninger.
But perhaps it’s indicative of just how much Klopp felt he needed to change things from the Brendan Rodgers regime that he has sent out 22 players this summer.
Admittedly some are youth team players going out on loan, but that’s still more outgoings than any other Premier League side this summer, aside from Chelsea – but we’ll discount them because of their ludicrous conveyor belt of loan deals.
