Liverpool “submit world record bid” for new goalkeeper

It's about time

This will be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters.

Liverpool fans feared that the club would not address their glaring goalkeeper issue this summer, with suggestions that Jurgen Klopp was happy to let Danny Ward fight it out with Loris Karius for the No 1 spot. Karius continues to show signs of shakiness during the Reds’ preseason, while Ward remains unproven at the top level.

It’s been known for months that Liverpool’s top target is Roma ‘keeper Alisson Becker but it had been suggested that the asking price for the Brazil international would make a deal unlikely.

But a positive update arrived on Tuesday morning because, according to reports in Italy, Liverpool have finally submitted a formal bid for Alisson.

Italian newspaper Il Messaggero claims that Liverpool have officially bid €60m bid plus €10 million in add-ons for the 25-year-old. However, Roma continue to hold tough on their €80 million valuation.

With the World Cup over and the close of the transfer window just three weeks away, we can expect the battle for Alisson’s signature to intensify because the Reds are not the only club interested in the Brazilian stopper.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Alisson but it looks more likely that the La Liga giants will instead focus on Thibaut Courtois, with Chelsea then potentially providing Liverpool with the toughest competition for Alisson.

Currently, the largest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper is the £34.7m that Manchester City paid for Ederson last summer.
