Leeds have called for their fans to change the lyrics of the x-rated chant they sing for Wilfried Gnonto because of the racial stereotypes it plays on.

Gnonto scored his first goal for the club in their 2-2 draw against West Ham on Wednesday before being serenaded by fans with a song that refers to the size of his penis.

The song, which is to the tune of Los Lobos’ 1987 hit La Bamba, has the lyrics: “Willy Gnonto, Willy Gnonto, he eats spaghetti, he drinks Moretti, his c***’s f****** massive”.

Fans were first heard singing the chant on the 19-year-old’s home debut against Bournemouth last year, causing Leeds to respond with a list of alternative last line of ‘he plays for United’.

Despite engaging with fan groups to try and get the lyrics changed, the original lines could still be heard sang around Elland Road.

It’s the second time a club in English football has pledged to their supporters to change the lyrics of a chant due to the racial stereotypes it contains.

Last month on-loan Sunderland winger Amad Diallo asked for fans to change his chant which claimed “He has the biggest d*** in the Championship”.

“Sunderland fans, I love your energy. Hearing you sing my name is incredible, but we need to be respectful. Let’s change the song, keep the noise and move forward together,” Diallo said in a statement.

His goal for Leeds broke a new record as he became the youngest goalscorer in Leeds’ history which was previously held by James Milner, who scored his first goal for the club in 2004.
