Kevin Doyle is earning three times more than a Champions League winner in the MLS

Much, much more

Kevin Doyle is a fan favourite over in Colorado and flying the Irish flag.

Major League Soccer has disclosed the annual salaries and ‘guaranteed compensation’ for each player on the 2017 roster.

The annual disclosure has revealed Brazilian forward Kaká is the top earner on $6.6m this season, with an extra $500,000 guaranteed once he hits performance and appearance related markers and is still at the club by the end of the year.

Digging down further into the figures of the league’s first ever salary report and there are some interesting Irish and English names in the mix.

Ireland forward Kevin Doyle is doing quite well for himself. The 33-year-old is into his third season at Colorado Rapids and has scored twice in five outings so far this season.

Doyle is on an even, base salary of $1,000,000 and, depending on bonus payments, could take home an extra €45,000 by season’s end.

That figure is almost three times what Ashley Cole is making at LA Galaxy. The England international, who won a Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, is on $350,000 with Galaxy.

Cole gained notoriety back in 2006 when he revealed how he had laughed at Arsenal’s contract offer of £55,000 a week. 11 years on and he is making approximately £5,250 with Galaxy. Living it up in sunny Los Angeles must soften the blow somewhat.

Interestingly, Cole is earning $200,000 a season less than the league’s other English representative – Kansas City striker and West Sussex native Dom Dwyer.

The 26-year-old, who was on the books with Norwich City’s youth team, moved to Texas as a teenager and made a name for himself in college football. He was signed up by Sporting Kansas City in 2012 but it was a loan move to Kaka’s Orlando City that brought him to everyone’s attention – he scored 15 times in 13 games.

Now in his fifth season with Kansas City, Dwyer is on $550,000 in basic salary with the potential to earn $668,000 if he and the club can hit their targets.
