“Hopefully, somewhere down the line, it will happen.”
Katie McCabe and Ruesha Littlejohn have slightly different takes on Ireland women’s team playing at the Aviva Stadium, but both were in agreement on their pick for the Euro 2022 Final.
McCabe and Littlejohn were both at a sold-out Wembley Stadium, this afternoon, for the Women’s Euro 2022 Final between hosts England and a strong Germany side.
With over 90,000 fans packed into Wembley for the big day, RTE’s Tony O’Donoghue asked Littlejohn if she would like to see Ireland play a big international game at the Aviva Stadium. Vera Pauw’s side have sold-out Tallaght Stadium for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Finland. Littlejohn commented:
“For me, yes. I think it is definitely something that is on the cards. Hopefully, somewhere down the line, it will happen. It would be great. We’ve got Tallaght Stadium sold out, so hopefully we can kick on from that and then, one day, we will hopefully play at the Aviva.
“It’s something that we’ll have to normalise, and we’ll have to get used to big crowds, like we can see here today.”
Interesting, that take from the Aston Villa star differs slightly from her captain, and partner, Katie McCabe.
“If you’re asking me should we play Finland in the Aviva Stadium then I would say no. That’s just my personal opinion,” McCabe told us, earlier this year.
“I haven’t spoken to other players on that or to the manager or anything like that. I don’t see why mid-campaign we’d switch home grounds. There’s no need for us to switch home ground.”
“Tallaght is our home, we love playing there,” said McCabe, who grew up near Tallaght Stadium near Kilnamanagh. “I think until we start selling that out there’s no need to jump the gun and start playing in the Aviva.”
When it came to their England vs. Germany prediction, both McCabe and Littlejohn were on the same page.
‘I hope my Arsenal teammates do well’ – Katie McCabe
Tony O’Donoghue could not let both the Ireland stars go without getting their big match prediction. He certainly enjoyed the take of Katie McCabe.
“I said, before, that it would be too soon for England to win it,” Ruseha Littlejohn reasoned, “so I’m going to stick with that and go with Germany.
“I’m going to sit on the fence!” McCabe joked.
“No,” she added, “I think Germany will win, just through their dominance. We watched them in the flesh, last Wednesday night, against France and how powerful they were. I hope my Arsenal teammates do well, but I’m going to go with Germany!”
