Jurgen Klopp says “the door is always open” for Steven Gerrard to come back to Liverpool

"When something needs to be announced, we will announce it"

Jurgen Klopp has kept the door open for Steven Gerrard to join his coaching team at Liverpool.

Former captain Gerrard, 36, announced his retirement from playing today and thoughts have already turned to what he might do next.

He has said he is interested in coaching and management and at his press conference at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground today, Reds boss Klopp was asked if there could be a job for Gerrard in his staff.

“We will see,” Klopp replied.

“The door is always open,” he added. “If he wants, I’m sure he will, and if he wants to make whatever career then we want to help him.

“I like him, and if I can help him I will. In life you need space to jump into the next thing that is new.

“When something needs to be announced, we will announce it, then we’ll talk.”

Klopp was also asked to rank Gerrard among Liverpool’s all time great players – but he would not be drawn on that.

“I’m only here 14 months, how could I be the person to say how big these people are?” he said.

“I met a few, I already met Stevie, he’s a great person, far away from wanting to be a legend or be handled as a legend.

“He’s a top player. It’s not important what I think. It’s important what the people think.”

Gerrard announced his retirement in an Instagram statement:
