A British football journalist has attempted to deflate the Stephanie Roche bubble and gotten an earful for his trouble
Sunday Times writer Duncan Castles has taken to Twitter to put forward the case for Roche rivals James Rodriguez and Robin van Persie, arguing that the World Cup stage puts Roche’s Peamount United screamer in the shade.
Can see why some want Stephanie Roche to win FIFA Puskas Award, but can't seriously argue that her's meets criteria for Goal of the Year.

There is a real difference between scoring in a match watched by 95 people for a team most have never heard of & scoring in the World Cup.

…Which is why the criteria for the Puskas Award specify the importance of the game and the importance of the goal. pic.twitter.com/fCfVhnXK63

Twitter, of course, was quick to pick holes in Castles’ argument, including former England forward Rodney Marsh…
@WarrenHaughton @JacquiOatley @DuncanCastles >SR was the best technical goal. If it does not fit criteria why nominate it ?!
— Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles it’s only one part of the criteria, and didn’t stop Ibrahimovic from winning last yr despite his goal being in a friendly.
— Anna Kessel (@Anna_Kessel) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles Harsh, esp with the goal in question, Roche’s is technically superior. If goals were like for like, maybe consider stage.

@DuncanCastles a beautiful goal from a top level league is certainly a criteria needed for Goal of the Year — Insan A Krisnamusi (@insan_sansan) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles Think you will find it ticks all 4 unless you are ridiculing Womens Irish Premier League football?
— Shane Dennedy (@Danumbered1) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles Still don’t get your point. Was a national top-division club match, no? It is undoubtedly the best of the 3 goals. — Richard James (@richjamesuk) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles Because she’s a woman and it wasn’t on Sky Super Sunday crap it shouldn’t be allowed?.rubbish,I hope she wins.i voted for her
— John o’Mahony (@ardfertjohnny) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles It is the “goal of the year” not “the Game that the goal was scored in” award yes?
— Cormac O’Malley (@cormacpro) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles so every World Cup year, the World Cup winning goal should win goal of the year? That’s what your saying.
— Dave Philbin (@dave_philbin) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles stupid argument. You could argue that she is under more pressure as she is playing women’s football and sexist pigs continue
— JonTighe (@jonortighe) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles to belittle the women’s game. No women’s games are sold out so should no women be in with a chance?
— JonTighe (@jonortighe) January 12, 2015
@DuncanCastles maybe more impressive to see that technique by someone who isn’t paid millions to train on said technique every day?
— Dave Wolinski (@DaveWolinski) January 12, 2015
Did Steph Roche turn @DuncanCastles down at a Christmas party? I've not seen negative campaigning like this since England's World Cup bid.
