Jose Mourinho’s biggest transfer regret is not signing Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool legend turned down the chance to move to Stamford Bridge in 2005

We’re amazed that he regrets anything considering he’s so bloody perfect

Jose Mourinho does a good line in wind ups and we feel that ahead of the League Cup semi final first leg this Tuesday against Liverpool he could have another doozy up his sleeve. In an interview with the Guardian, the ‘Special One’ says the failure to sign Anfield legend Steven Gerrard is his biggest regret.  It’s not clear if this is Jose’s only regret in his whole life but his reasons for having a ‘sadface’ at not getting the midfielder to join him at Stamford Bridge are pretty interesting.

The Portuguese admits he was hoping to complete a dream trio in the centre of the field with Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Claude Makélélé in the same side but they just missed out on the former England captain,

‘We did everything to try and it was almost there. I was dreaming of [Claude] Makélélé, Gerrard and [Frank] Lampard in midfield. We were playing in a proper triangle without a No10 and playing Maka in front of the defendersHis people were open to him joining a top side like Chelsea. But to me personally he never said he would come. Never. He [Gerrard] was always a red and I think the decision was right.’

It certainly would have been an incredibly impressive side but Gerrarddecided to stay in red and win just an FA Cup and a League Cup since at Anfield. Without him at Stamford Bridge the club hoovered up titles and other trophies under Jose as well as subsequent managers.

He also reveals that he tried to tempt Frank Lampard to Inter Milan but that deal also fell through, which was another massive disappointment for the manager.

The ex Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss also goes onto say that he feels Chelsea fans should lay off the Liverpool captain after his infamous slip against the Blues in the Premier League last season tilted the title in favour of Manchester City.

His slip is regularly sung about by opposition fans, and especially Chelsea’s, but Jose feels that fans should show a player like Gerrard more respect,

The song that my fans have I don’t like at all. A couple of times it is good fun but to go and go and go, especially with a player like him who deserves respect, I don’t think you don’t need that. We have so many other songs, you don’t need that one.’

We don’t have proof but if Jose’s tongue wasn’t firmly in cheek or even outside of his mouth when saying the above we’d be amazed.
