Jose Mourinho identifies Benfica winger as transfer target after missing out on Bale and Perisic

A report claims United are monitoring the player closely

Jose Mourinho made little secret of the fact he wanted to add a winger to his Manchester United squad over the summer.

United were strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic throughout the transfer window, with the inevitable talk of a move for Gareth Bale also briefly returning in the days before the European Super Cup game against Real Madrid.

United reportedly failed to agree a fee with Inter for Perisic, who has since inked a new deal to remain in Italy. As for Bale, reports in Spain suggested his departure from the Bernabeu hinged on a move for Kylian Mbappe. By the time the French international sealed his switch to Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day, it was clear that Bale wouldn’t be arriving at Old Trafford.

With all this in mind, it’s no surprise to learn that – according to reports, at least – Mourinho is already looking at new targets.

A new name to be linked with a move to United is Andrija Zivkovic of Benfica. O Jogo claim that Mourinho has ordered scouts to monitor the 21-year-old Serbian, who signed for the Lisbon club from Partizan Belgrade last summer.

The winger is said to have been earning favourable reports from Mourinho’s scouts, who are said to have watched him lay on the assist for Benfica’s goal in their 2-1 defeat to CSKA Moscow in midweek.

Zivkovic is expected to face United in the coming weeks, with Benfica drawn in the same Champions League group. United already have one former Benfica player on their books – Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.

Were United to secure the 21-year-old’s services, he may shunt Marcus Rashford off free-kick duties.

Not bad at all.
