“The history of football is there, Sky didn’t create football.”
Johnny Giles isn’t one bit happy at the fact that Ireland’s Jimmy Dunne’s record is being ignored during all the praise for Jamie Vardy’s goalscoring exploits.
Vardy scored in 11 consecutive games when he beat David De Gea at the weekend which eclipsed Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of 10 which he recorded in 2003.
UPDATE: Vardy failed to score in the 3-0 win over Swansea so Dunne still holds the record.
Dunne, who scored in 12 consecutive matches for Sheffield United in the 1930s has barely been mentioned as Sky continues to focus on the Premier League era.
“The way Sky go on, the records only started in 1992,” Giles said on Off the Ball. “It’s very disrespectful to the players who have records like Jimmy Dunne.”
Giles believes that Sky should respect the true record holder of consecutive goalscoring, regardless of the time that has passed since.
He said: “Just because he was playing a long time ago, it doesn’t mean the records don’t count but that’s Sky.”
And it’s not just the Vardy issue that irks Giles. The RTÉ pundit also points to the fact that Sky continues to laud Alan Shearer as being the first player to score 100 goals for two different clubs.
“Jimmy Greaves did that in the 60’s and 70’s,” Giles said. “He scored over 100 goals for Chelsea and then scored over 100 goals for Tottenham and he doesn’t get a mention. That’s wrong!”
Hear, hear.
